Frequently asked questions: If you have any questions which are not answered here please contact me

How long will my portrait take?
Portraits take between one and four days depending on the size, number of sitters and medium used. I will give you an estimated time of delivery when you place an order. If you need a portrait by a certain date make sure you order your painting well in advance, as I do have a waiting list.

How do I pay for my portrait?
I require a 20% deposit to confirm orders. When the portrait is completed I will email you a preview image, or I could send one by post. Full payment is then required before the portrait is despatched. Payments can be made by cheque or postal order made payable to R. O'Neill.

How will the final portrait be sent? Could it be damaged in the post?

If you live in the Barnsley area, I will try to deliver the portrait myself, if this is not possible you can come and collect it. However most portraits will be posted. I send my work by Special Delivery. This is a next day delivery service which ensures the portraits are insured whilst in transit. A signature will be required upon delivery. I will let customers know in advance when I expect to post the portrait so they can ensure someone is in to receive it. If your painting arrives irrepairably damaged you will be fully refunded.

Do portraits come framed?
No,  because the glass is much too fragile to send by post. All of my portraits do come mounted though, ready to frame has you wish. If you are unsure what style of frame would be suitable, I am happy to give you some advice.

How should I select the best photo?
Ideally photos should be clear and sharp. Also try to avoid photos with harsh lighting and flash lighting. The better the photo you give me the more I have to work with. If you are unsure you could send me a selection of photos and I will pick which I think will produce the best portrait. If it's a digital photo then ideally it should be sent as a jpeg. Don't worry about the size I'm on Broadband.

If I take some photos specially, should I try to get a particular pose or angle?
The problem with working from photos is that the artist never meets the sitter, so it's important to select a photograph which shows the character of the subject. For best results take the photo in natural light or somewhere with good artificial lighting. As for the angle, traditionally a portrait would be with the head turned slightly to one side or straight on.

What if I like the picture but would like some detail changed?
If there is some small element that you would like changed let me know, however this may not be possible.

Can I send you my order by email with digital photos?
Yes, provided the photos are of high resolution.

What do you mean by pencil with white pastel?
This technique involves using pencil on coloured paper to create the shadows then putting on the highlights with white pastel or chalk. Black and white photographs are best for this technique.

If I'm not happy with the picture will I have to buy it?
If you are not happy with your picture and it can't be altered, then there is no obligation for you to buy. However I'm afraid the deposit is non-refundable.

Can you make the portrait larger than the sizes advertised?
I prefer not to go above 20"x16" but if you would like a larger size please contact me for a price.
